Police record speeding, drink-driving rise

New South Wales north coast roads were fatality-free over the long weekend, but police say overall driver behaviour was worse than last year.

Northern region traffic commander Glen Truebody says by yesterday afternoon 369 drivers in the region had been booked for speeding, that is up by 24 on last year.

He says 56 people were also charged with drink-driving, which is also a disappointing result.

Senior Constable Truebody says people travelling during the rest of the school holidays should use caution.

"For anyone who is travelling the remainder of the school holidays, police will still be out and around as Operation North Roads will continue through the rest of the school holidays, until next Sunday," he said.

He says too many people are speeding and in one instance on Sunday, a 24-year-old man was caught travelling at 150 kilometres an hour in a 100 speed zone at Nabiac.

Senior Constable Glen Truebody says the number of people drink-driving is worrying.

"Police in the northern region recorded 4,801 breath tests, from that there's been 56 drink-driving offences detected, which is four more than last year, so it's very steady," he said.

"It's always a concern, 56 PCAs [proscribed concentration of alcohol] is 56 too many. There is no excuse for drinking and driving."
