Council forced to fund drought service

The Murrindindi council is frustrated the Victorian Government will not give it funding to employ a drought counsellor.

It has been forced to use its own money and staff to provide the service.

The general manager of operations, Rob Croxford, says it has secured a small amount of money that will help, with back-up support from existing community and family care services.

But he says a specialised drought service is preferred.

"For financial counselling at the moment people need to travel to Broadford or to Wallan which is a 50 minute to an hour trip," he said.

"It's difficult to make sure we have got those resources."
