Gulf fishers reflect on tough year

Posted October 7, 2008 11:15:00

Gulf of Carpentaria fishermen say it has been a tough year for the industry as buyers opt for cheaper international product, but they are optimistic people will return to buying Australian fish.

Today marks the end of this year's barramundi fishing season.

Gary Ward of the Gulf Commercial Fishermen's Association says they need a good wet season to ensure good stocks next year.

"I think it will be all right. It's all on the wet season, it depends on the wet, how big a wet we get and how big a cyclone season we get," he said.

"We like to see about two or three cyclones in the Gulf at the end of the year. It stirs up the food chain and it just generally makes it good for our fish, so we're optimistic."
