Glassings spark call for trading hour changes

Posted October 7, 2008 12:14:00

Hamilton licensees are being urged to immediately curb trading hours, after three glassing attacks across the region over the long weekend.

A 34-year-old received 10 stitches after she was struck in the head with a glass bottle at Hamilton on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, a 35-year-old man and 20-year-old man have undergone surgery after similar incidents in Newcastle and Warners Bay.

Inner-city residents' spokesman Tony Brown says curfews have worked in Newcastle and he is urging Hamilton hoteliers to follow suit.

"Well I'd ask the Hamilton hotels to act responsibly and stop picking on local residents with draconian legal action and listen to the police, listen to the authorities, listen to the residents and voluntarily adopt the inner-city curfew to avoid costly legal action and further challenges," he said.
