Plans underway for wetlands park rehabilitation

Posted October 7, 2008 12:36:00

Seven years after BHP handed over a 500 hectare parcel of land at Belmont to the New South Wales Government, plans are finally underway to rehabilitate the site.

The Belmont wetlands state park was officially created in 2005 and the trust which oversees the site is now preparing to develop a plan of management.

Trust chairman Peter Morris says it will set out future uses for the site, which in the past has been used for sandmining and as a rubbish dump.

"Much of the landform has been damaged, but we want it brought back into a facility that can be for eco-tourism," he said.

"We have a beautiful piece of Australia's coastline and it'll become in our objectives not only a jewel for regional and state attractions, it'll be a jewel amongst international attractions."
