Patient backlog puts Townsville Hospital on alert

The Townsville Hospital in north Queensland is back on code yellow internal alert and is expected to review elective surgery lists this morning.
The hospital has been forced back onto alert by a backlog of patients in the emergency department waiting for hospital beds.
A hospital spokesman has confirmed the eight additional beds provided by the State Government last month are full.
The Australian Medical Association's local representative, Dr Sam Baker, says staff at the hospital cannot continue to work under this pressure.
"It's extremely frustrating when you cannot provide the service you are trained to do ... for the public when you're given inferior resources," Dr Baker said.
