G-G gets appreciation of outback issues

Posted October 8, 2008 10:26:00

Governor-General Quentin Bryce says learning about the history of the Darling River is helping her to put its current state into perspective.

Ms Bryce arrived in Broken Hill yesterday after a tour of Bourke on Monday.

She visited the Menindee Lakes and spoke to the officer in charge of the lakes' storage, Mike Arandt.

Ms Bryce says speaking to people like Mr Arandt is helping her appreciate the issues facing the region.

"They have an enormous confidence in the future because they have such an understanding of the past," she said.

"What I was told in Bourke is that this part of Australia is in it's fourth king drought since Federation, so putting things into perspective, I think, [is] very significant."
