Weather, vandalism delay jetty restoration work

Bad weather and a vandal attack have led to delays with a restoration project on Coffs Harbour's heritage listed timber jetty.
The $1.6 million project will see about 100 rotting piles replaced and repairs done to other structural timber.
The company behind the project, Waterways Construction, says it lost valuable diving records in an arson attack on a work shed early on Sunday morning.
Company spokesman Mal Hiley says there have been delays but the aim is still to have work finished by the end of November.
"We specialise in heavy timber restoration and repairs, so it's not uncommon for us, but the sea conditions there haven't been helpful over the last month," he said.
"There's been heavy seas rolling in and things you don't anticipate like a bank of seaweed coming through a metre deep, that makes it very difficult for divers."
Mr Hiley says the entire jetty structure could have been badly damaged if the deliberately lit fire had spread.
"Certainly [the fire was] only metres from the timber jetty which would be a tragedy if there was any loss to that," he said.
