Seeping groundwater may be affecting Coorong: research

Posted October 8, 2008 11:38:00

New research shows water seeping from the ground may be affecting the flow and water quality in the Coorong.

The report from the Federal Government's Geoscience Department looked at the amount of groundwater getting into the Coorong system.

Soil and vegetation were monitored and thermal imagery was also used to find areas discharging groundwater.

The report says groundwater has the potential to influence wetland hydrology and ecosystems.

It suggests that groundwater has played a vital role in water flow in the Coorong, but it found the impact on water quality is only speculative, as the exact volume seeping into the system is unknown.
