Grape growers fuming over truck bypass plan

Posted October 8, 2008 11:45:00

Coonawarra vineyard owners have voiced their anger to the Wattle Range Council over plans to build a truck bypass through prime wine growing land.

A special meeting of council was held last night, to give the vineyard operators a chance to voice their objections to the plans.

The president of the Coonawarra Grapegrowers Associations, Stuart Sharman, says alternatives bypass routes have been suggested to council.

"There's approximately seven-and-a-half hectares that would be affected of grape growing country," he said.

"The Coonawarra Grapegrowers have presented an alternative route for a number of years now that would actually incorporate moving heavy vehicles out of Coonawarra and Penola together."
