Eden fishers not rushing climate change response

Posted October 8, 2008 12:03:00

Twofold Bay Fishermen's co-operative chairman, Fritz Drenkharn, says the Eden fleet on the New South Wales far south coast is adopting a "wait and see" policy regarding the impact of climate change.

Mr Drenkharn was responding to a new report from the CSIRO, saying changes in ocean temperatures, currents and rainfall could affect fish and shellfish numbers.

Federal Climate Change Minister Penny Wong warned this week that Australia's fishing industry should prepare for changes.

But Mr Drenkharn says local fishermen are optimistic about the future and will make changes when they are needed.

"We are fully informed from the Commonwealth Government in relation to climate change," he said.

"The fishing industry has been part of workshops and forums to discuss climate change but until it actually happens we will be playing on condition as normal.

"There are winners and losers. You might lose some species but you will gain other species."
