Task force to look at regional health staff shortages

Queensland Health Minister Stephen Robertson says the State Government will do more to attract medical staff to regional areas.

Mr Robertson told State Parliament that growing regional cities need more health workers.

He announced a Ministerial task force to work on medical staffing, education and training outside the south-east.

"Places like Cairns are undoubtedly benefiting from Queensland's strong economic climate," he said.

"One of the biggest challenges they face is to attract and retain health work forces to meet the needs of their growing and aging populations.

"The task force will initially provide the Government with advice on ways to enhance medical staffing and provide sustainable medical services at Cairns, Mackay, Rockhampton, Bundaberg and Hervey Bay hospitals."
