The body of a Queensland tourist has been found on a remote cattle station in the Kimberley in Western Australia.

The man in his 50s was discovered on Meda Station about 40 kilometres east of Derby yesterday afternoon.

It is believed he died several days ago.

The man had written "help" in the sand near a makeshift shelter and an empty water bottle was found hanging from a tree nearby.

Police say he did not have any water with him.

The average temperature at Derby for the past few days has been 39 degrees Celsius.

It is understood the man had set out on his own from Derby last Wednesday and was expected to be in the bush for a few days.

Detectives are at the scene and an aerial search is being conducted to locate the man's car while his relatives in Queensland have been notified.
