No more shipping containers to be used in tree vandalism fight

Posted October 8, 2008 14:10:00

Port Stephens' Mayor Bruce McKenzie says he doubts the council will again resort to blocking water views with shipping containers as a response to tree vandalism.

Councillors last night supported a new policy to deal with tree vandals, which includes the option of erecting barriers when trees are illegally removed.

But Cr McKenzie says he thinks the previous council went too far when it placed two shipping containers at Boat Harbour earlier this year.

"I personally don't think you'll see any more shipping containers. That I think was a knee-jerk reaction to the problem," he said.

"Council is [instead] setting out to address it in conjunction with the local people and the local 355 committees, which take care, control and management of most of the reserves in the shire."
