Churches respond to financial storm

Posted October 8, 2008 14:37:00

The global financial crisis has prompted two churches in northern Tasmania to join forces next week to try to find solutions to poverty.

The Catholic Church's non-profit organisation Centacare and the Door of Hope are holding an Anti-Poverty forum called "Running on Empty" to discuss poverty around the globe, as well as in Tasmania.

The organiser of the forum, Ixa De Haan, says while poverty is a growing problem in Tasmania, it is important to research and understand poverty in other regions.

"We can't just look at our own backyard and focus only on local issues and that's why when we've organised this conference," Ms De Haan said.

"We do look at it from a global perspective because we do live in a global village so to speak and the main aims of anti poverty week are to strengthen public understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty."
