Council looks to pick up jobless mill workers

Posted October 8, 2008 14:38:00

The North Burnett Regional Council says it hopes to take on some of the workers who will lose their jobs when two sawmills in the region close.

About 40 people will lose their jobs when the Allies Creek and Mulgildie sawmills close in the next few months.

The council has met Allies Creek workers ahead of a meeting with the Queensland Government on Friday.

Deputy Mayor Paul Francis says there is some timber bridge maintenance work to be done that could employ some of the workers.

"We feel that with some State Government assistance to help us fund that work, we could probably employ an extra bridge gang and get through that work quicker," he said.

"But we just don't have the budget at the moment to accelerate that program, we think with State Government assistance it may well be something we could have a look at."
