'Beauty disadvantaged' call sparks worldwide interest

Posted October 8, 2008 14:48:00

The Mayor of Mt Isa says he has received letters and emails from women across the world eager to learn more about the city and possibly move there.

Earlier this year, John Molony made international headlines over comments that "beauty disadvantaged" women would be welcome in Mt Isa, in north-west Queensland, because of a large gender imbalance.

Councillor Molony says women from as far away as the Philippines, Spain, South Africa and the United States have contacted him asking about jobs and prospective partners.

"They come from all parts of the world and a lot from Australia expressing an interest ... in coming here," he said.

"I'm passing them on to where they've expressed an interest in being introduced or receiving more information.

"The gender imbalance has attracted their interest mainly."
