Seatbelt could have saved bus victim, union says

Posted October 8, 2008 18:48:00

The Transport Workers Union (TWU) has renewed its call for seatbelts on buses after the death of a 67-year-old woman yesterday.

The woman was a passenger on a bus at Redcliffe last weekend that was forced to brake suddenly. She was thrown forward and hit her head and later died in hospital.

The TWU's Hughie Williams says the death could have been avoided if she was wearing a seatbelt.

"We want to make sure that the Government have got a priority to make sure that seatbelts are installed in all buses, certainly with a priority on school buses," he said.

"But we want to make sure that accidents of that kind or accidents of any kind can be averted or maybe a fatality can be averted."
