The West Australian Government says it is keeping an election commitment by deferring a planned 10 week recreational fishing ban due to start next week.

The ban on fishing of species deemed at risk, such as dhufish, pink snapper and baldchin groper on the coast between Kalbarri and Augusta, was due to begin on October 15 and end on Christams Day.

It was part of a 12 point plan proposed by the previous Labor government to help protect fish stocks.

The Minister for Fisheris, Norman Moore, says he is not convinced seasonal closures are the right approach.

"There is significant pressure on the fishery and we are deferring a decision in order to look at a whole range of other options that can help us protect the fishery," he said.

"It's not to be seen as open slather for them to go and help themselves to as many fish as they want to catch."
