Outback towns urged to get healthy

Posted October 9, 2008 14:00:00

Outback communities are being encouraged to get active as part of a health and fitness campaign underway in south-west Queensland.

South West Health Communities is a federally funded program aimed at providing support to help people overcome problems like heart disease and diabetes.

Spokeswoman Sally Vetter says it has taken an exercise physiologist and a dietitian to remote towns like Cunnamulla, Thargomindah and Quilpie, to provide advice in areas where it is not always available.

"The obesity issue is one that we see a lot of in the media, so helping target issues like that but also the small towns often miss out on these sorts of activities, so it's great to be able to go on and see those people that don't often get a chance to receive this sort of information," she said.
