Visit brings smiles to sick children

Posted October 9, 2008 15:00:00

Young people receiving treatment at the Mackay Base Hospital had a welcome break from their daily routine with a visit from a children's charity yesterday.

The visit was part of the Starlight Express Van Tour, which uses positive distractions such as clowning and face painting to bring smiles to the faces of seriously ill children living in rural and remote areas.

Starlight Express team member 'Captain Sparkles' says the van visits Mackay about four times a year, and its work has many positive effects for young patients.

"I think anyone who's experienced a period of being unwell knows that it can be really hard to keep your spirits high and keep that fun and laughter and joy," he said.

"So when the captains come along we're really able to ignite that joy and that fun and that laughter back into them and the repercussions of that can ripple on."
