Pension relief 'high on Govt's priority list'

Posted October 9, 2008 21:30:00

The Federal Finance Minister, Lindsay Tanner, says giving relief to single pensioners is high on the Government's priority list, but he will not say when it will act.

The Government is likely to have to factor into next year's Budget a drop in revenue from the global financial crisis.

Mr Tanner will not say whether the pension system will get a boost, but on Sky News he highlighted its importance.

"We clearly accept that high on our list of priorities is to do something about the base rate of the pension, particularly for single pensioners," he said.

"The circumstances we're now confronting are much more complex, they don't necessarily mean that there is a lesser need to address this issue, but clearly the natural focus is on next year's Budget."
