Oppn blames states for poor homeless support

Posted October 10, 2008 11:05:00

The federal Opposition has accused state governments of dropping the ball when it comes to providing services and accommodation for homeless people.

New figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show that more than 350 people a day on average were turned away from homeless shelters during a 12-month period.

The Opposition spokesman for housing and local government, Scott Morrisson, says state governments should be more accountable for the funding they receive from the Federal Government.

"The Howard government spent literally billions on the states in terms of supportive accommodation, on public housing," he said.

"The net result of how that money was spent by states is we have fewer public housing units today than we did over 10 years ago.

"So the money was flowing but the services were not flowing from the state governments."
