Serbia angry as neighbours officially recognise Kosovo

Posted October 10, 2008 12:00:00

Two neighbours of Europe's newest independent state, Kosovo, have officially recognised it.

The vote in the Macedonian Parliament in favour of recognising Kosovo was an overwhelming 85 to one, with 16 abstentions.

This paves the way for Macedonia's conservative nationalist Government of Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski to formally announce recognition.

Coming just hours after another former Yugoslav state, Montenegro, recognised Kosovo, this is a double blow for Serbia, which continues to claim sovereignty over the province which it ruled until 1999.

Serbia responded by immediately expelling Montenegro's ambassador.
