Flood rescue recognition 50 years on

Posted October 10, 2008 13:48:00

A Mackay man in north Queensland has been recognised for saving the lives of two people, 50 years after the devastating Foulden floods.

Arthur Benson rescued two people from the roof of a house in 1958 and his heroic efforts were officially recognised yesterday after it was discovered he had not received any formal recognition since the event.

He says he is very grateful for the award and still counts himself lucky to have himself survived the disaster.

"I still could not believe that I've been so lucky to have my award after 50 years because we ... should've been drowned going in that old boat and the waves, the big waves coming over the top, and we got up and got the people off the roof and it is marvellous," he said.
