States 'doing enough for homeless': Govt

The Federal Government has rejected Opposition claims that state governments have dropped the ball on the issue of homelessness.

New figures from the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare show that more than 350 people a day on average were turned away from homeless shelters during a 12-month period.

The Opposition says it is evidence the states are not doing enough, but the Federal Minister for Housing, Tanya Plibersek, says that is untrue.

"The states understand that Kevin Rudd and his Government are committed to reducing homelessness in Australia and we've put our money on the table and the relationship, therefore, has been extremely cooperative," she said.
