New car buyers expect 'lemon protection'

Posted October 10, 2008 16:35:00

The RACQ is calling on the Queensland Government to introduce laws to protect new car buyers from "lemons".

Spokesman for the motoring group Steve Spalding says people often become frustrated when their new cars have constant problems, and they repeatedly have to return the car to have things fixed.

He says most new cars do not have problems but defective ones should have be replaced.

"Motorists do expect, and understandably so, that when they buy a new vehicle they get a long period of trouble-free motoring where they're not exposed to all the sorts of problems that owners with older vehicles get," he said.

"That's the reason people buy new vehicles."
