New breast screening units for regional Qld

Posted October 13, 2008 09:15:00

Six new digitally-equipped breast screening units will help women in regional Queensland access a reliable and efficient screening service.

A mobile unit has been launched to service north Queensland coastal areas west to Mount Isa, while another five will service other parts of the state by the end of next year.

Cancer Council Queensland's Anne Savage says the units help encourage women to have mammograms - because they travel to remote areas.

"One in eight women will be diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 85," she said.

"We want as much as possible to detect and diagnose breast cancer as early as we can in order to beat it - and the earlier that we detect it, the better chance there is that we'll beat it."
