Schwartzel eases to three-shot win in Madrid

Posted October 13, 2008 09:37:00

South African Charl Schwartzel has clinched his third European Tour title, winning the inaugural Madrid Masters by three strokes from Argentina's Ricardo Gonzalez.

The 24-year-old winner claimed his second victory in Madrid as he closed with a blemish-free 5-under 66 for a 19-under 265 four-round total.

Schwartzel, whose previous Madrid win came last year at the Spanish Open, went into the final round a stroke ahead of Gonzalez and never let the burly Argentine get on terms.

Andrew Tampion was the best-placed Australian in a tie for 13th place at 8-under.
