Farmers urged to research organic sector

Posted October 13, 2008 13:41:00

Organic farmers say there are still big opportunities for primary producers looking to enter the sector, but they need to do market research first.

This week is National Organic Week, aimed at raising awareness of the fastest growing food sector in the world.

The Australian organics industry is worth between $250 and $400 million a year, with demand continually outstripping supply.

Dr Andrew Monk from Biological Farmers of Australia says a recent report has shown massive growth in organic sales.

"The overall headline figure was an 80 per cent growth in farm gate values since the last report in 2004," he said.

"It's definitely still a niche market sector, but with evident promise both here in Australia and in overseas markets, but like with any market segment people need to do their research to understand the whims of that marketplace."
