Cheaper housing push for resource boom regions

Posted October 13, 2008 14:30:00

St Vincent de Paul says it has been talking to Queensland councils about ways to provide affordable housing in towns affected by the resources boom.

The welfare group's state president has just completed a tour of southern and south-west Queensland, visiting centres including Roma, Dalby, Dirranbandi, Cunnamulla, Quilpie and Charleville.

John Campbell says he has also been been talking to state and federal governments about the problem as more families come under stress.

"It's great for the area to have this prosperity happening, but for those people on a normal wage you know $30,000 to $50,000 a year, it makes it very hard for them because prices go up, and they're all affected," he said.

"We're seeing more and more people coming in now asking for assistance, particularly for rent."
