Fires could be worst in 5 years: RFS

Posted October 13, 2008 15:04:00

The Rural Fire Service (RFS) says this summer on the New South Wales far south coast could be one of the worst bushfire seasons in five years.

It says widespread fires caused by lightning strikes are a very real possibility, with ground conditions providing quick ignition.

But RFS spokesman Andrew Stark says the sense of community on the far south coast will help to lessen the fire risk.

"We're looking at a summer where the conditions we've had through winter where we've had low levels of rainfall across the wider south-east region mean that the potential for intense fires is higher than normal," he said.

"The potential for the ground fuel moistures exist for this year. History has shown that the brigades and the community and other agencies have responded very quickly on the south coast to fires."
