Fishers show interest in new safety device

Posted October 13, 2008 15:11:00

A new safety device, developed by a south-west Western Australian fisherman and the Department of Environment and Conservation, has attracted the attention of fishers on WA's south coast.

The device consists of an anchor drilled into rock which fishers then tie themselves to prevent them being washed away by big waves.

Busselton fisherman Ray Walker began installing the anchors in rocks in the Capes to Capes area last summer.

Graham Cooper from the Recreation Fishing Advisory Council says the technology would be perfect in dangerous areas along the south coast.

"There's probably three or four specific areas that really worry me and that is the Dempster Head, Salmon Beach area where we know that people have lost their lives and of course Chapman Point," he said.

"That's probably three areas that come to my mind quickly."
