Court stops mine road development

Posted October 13, 2008 15:35:00

The wardens court has prevented Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) subsidiary, FMG Chichester, from building a road through Hancock Prospecting's Roy Hill iron ore project.

FMG Chichester applied for a licence to build the road to transport its ore through Roy Hill because it is the shortest route from Newman to its Christmas Creek and Cloud Break operations.

Hancock objected on the grounds that building the road would be detrimental to the exploration, planning and financing of the project.

Warden Graeme Calder found the road would affect Hancock's operations and reduce the efficiency of the mine.

The Roy Hill Project is 120 kilometres north of Newman, at the eastern end of the Chichester range.
