Teachers to vote on another strike plan

Posted October 13, 2008 20:00:00

Teachers are making plans for another strike in South Australia, citing little progress in their pay negotiations with the SA Government.

As students resumed for final term, union delegates met and decided to have at least one half-day strike by the end of this month.

The planned industrial action will be put to a vote of teachers on Tuesday.

Correna Haythorpe of the Australian Education Union says parents should know the date by Thursday.

"It's our intention to stay in the mediation process. We believe this is the right way forward," she said.

"However it's come to the point where we need to take stronger political action to get the State Government to listen to us."

SA Industrial Relations Minister Paul Caica says the Industrial Relations Commission may be asked to arbitrate the lengthy dispute.

"We will do whatever is necessary to avoid disruption in the all-important term four to both students and their parents," he said.

State school teachers are demanding a 21 per cent pay rise over three years and cancellation of a new funding model for schools.

The union and the Government have another mediation session scheduled for Wednesday.
