A United States Marine has been accused of sexually assaulting a sex worker in inner Sydney on Sunday night.

More than 3,000 US marines and naval personnel were in Sydney over the weekend after the USS Peleliu and the USS Halsey arrived on Friday.

Police say the woman was assaulted at a Potts Point business about 8:00pm (AEDT).

Detectives investigating the attack arrested a 25-year-old man yesterday afternoon.

He was charged with assault with intent to have sexual intercourse and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

The man was bailed to appear in Downing Centre Local Court next month.
