Prince Charles has been invited to appear on the BBC's Doctor Who television series - and his office has not ruled it out.

Initially, Clarence House turned down the approach. The move prompted the show's executive producer Russell T Davies to label the Prince a "miserable swine" in a joking reference to the heir to the throne's favourite radio show The Goons.

But a Clarence House spokeswoman told Reuters says the Prince himself had not actually seen the request.

"We did receive a request from Doctor Who's producers," she said. "It was not turned down by Prince Charles but by a Clarence House official. We receive hundreds of requests and he doesn't see them all."

She added: "It's not uncommon for people to resubmit requests with different criteria and if it was resubmitted we would look at it again."

With the show's lead actor David Tennant winning rave reviews for his work with the Royal Shakespeare Company at the moment, the fifth season of Doctor Who is not due until 2010, though three one-off specials featuring the time-travelling adventurer are planned for 2009.

Common Charlie, David is a great Doctor it would be a shame to pass up this opportunity (our Kylie couldn't).

Just a shame that Donna's (Catherine Tate) role as the Doctor's side-kick has finished... could you imangine that Catherine Tate and Prince Charles :)

...or for that matter can we imagine Dr Who without Catherine Tate, and the newly introduced soap opera element to the scripts? Please!

I hardly think the new Doctor Who is soap opera (currently still up there as one of my favorite sci-fi shows - actually one of my favorite shows), it is just aligned more with our current generation... perhaps it says more about your age more than anything Doh ;)

Remember if you don't like it that remote in your hand is useful at changing the channel.

Maybe it shows my age, but I much preferred it when it was full of vacuum cleaners called Daleks going around saying "exterminate". No room for soap there...

Thank goodness they got rid of Donna. Although occasionally amusing, it diluted the scifi flow too much.

I don't expect the show to use the same approach as the earlier series but it is focussing far too much on the sidekicks in the last few series.

Charles was supposedly asked to guest appear in a scene in The Goodies in the '70s, but that never went ahead. Perhaps this is ol big ears' chance to break into television.

I remember the Silver Budgie once made a guest appearance on that old Australian soap 'A Country Practice' - but that was okay, because Hawke was a man bereft of any personal dignity or class.

The Heir Apparent appearing on a science-fiction TV show? It's just not done, old boy.

I can't see what harm the prince's appearance would do. Dr Who used to be a really wonderful program but now it has just become another boring sci-fi program. David does his best but the structure of the program has changed entirely. I agree with Doh about the Soap Opera aspect, though that is not the worst of it. It's a boring show, and it is such a shame because it used to be so clever and and was really one of my favourite programs before it became completely dependant on computer generated special effects and pyrotechnics.

Yes, I pine for the squeaky polystyrene props too. It was part of the appeal, seeing what could be done with a shoestring.

You are right- I really miss the old show where they got to run up and down corridors all the time before the current female sidekick got locked in a dungeon for an entire episode by a man in a rubber suit.

        sigh....

        happy flashback time....

(having said that, the last ep of the current season where Donna basically just pressed the 'defeat Daleks' button before 15mins of fangirl pleasing 'Rose I Love you' sop was pretty bad.)

Why not? He appears to be disconnected from reality a large part of the time, so isn't this a logical step?

Actually, Prince Charles has been ahead of the game in numerous areas such as the fight against global warming, the push for more organic farming and better farming practices. I also support his views that most modern architecture is complete rubbish and lacks any style. History has shown that he will push these issues a few years before they become popular, he'll get rubbished and ridiculed for being "out of touch with reality" and then the mainstream catches up and starts championing the same issues. The man is a lot smarter than he's given credit for.

Well said R, - If Prince Charles is out of step with reality then the majority of our population hasn't even begun to think as far outside the square as this man.

Global warming; farming; architecture and the design of environmentally sustainable towns where not a drop of water is wasted and houses are bulit to reduce carbon emissions are just a few of his successes.

May he keep on keeping out of touch with reality I say and let's hear more from him.

Wow, as a watcher of Dr. Who from it's inception as a kid in the UK (I saw THE first episode, which would apprently bestow some kind of cult status on me if I were a Sci-fi fan, which I'm not)
    Now, who could he play?
    Davros?
Dress him up in a Zarbi outfit?
Or invent a new character, the leader of in inbred aristocracy decended from a bunch of thugs and gangsters who maintain an antiquated lifestyle amongst great riches while the rest of the universe falls into poverty and chaos?

Considering that most of that family come across as having the personality of a Dalek- one would have thought that Clarence House would have jumped at being able to portray at least one of them as vaguely human.... then maybe not!

As an interesting aside, Prince Charles was also offered a bit part in a James Bond film, can't remember which one as one of Q's off-siders. He was on a tour of the studios at the time when they were filming. He didn't take up the offer though.
