Police say family members have visited the site of a search for a missing kayaker on Victoria's south-west coast.

Searchers have found a mobile phone belonging to a kayaker who disappeared off Victoria's south west coast.

The phone was found this morning. His battered kayak and a life jacket were found yesterday.

The 39-year-old was reported missing yesterday afternoon, after he went kayaking at Childers Cove, east of Warrnambool.

Warrnambool Senior Sergeant Paul Hargreaves says family members have visited the search site.

"They're like us, holding out hope that he's going to turn up and that's what you have to work on," he said.

Victoria Police are hoping two witnesses may be able to provide information about the missing man.

Senior Sergeant Paul Hargreaves says police want to talk to two people who may have seen the man in the water.

"Now they may be able to assist us in relation to the direction he went and how he was handling that surf at the time," he said.
