Market up 6pc after Wall Street record

Market up: Investors will be watching the boards for more gains today (AAP)

Australian shares have jumped more than 6 per cent in early trade after Wall Street posted its biggest one-day points gain on record.

In the first hour of trade the All Ordinaries index was up 261 points to 4,402 while the ASX 200 had put on 262 points to 4,442.

The Australian dollar has increased against the greenback this morning and is buying around 70.2 US cents.

Overnight Wall Street posted huge gains after governments around the world unveiled billions of dollars worth of bank rescue packages.

The Dow Jones index closed up 936 points higher, or more than 11 per cent.

In Europe, also markets surged up to 11 per cent after Eurozone countries announced details of their huge bank rescue plan.
