No drought breaking rain forecast for western NSW

Posted October 14, 2008 11:37:00

Drought breaking rain is not expected across western New South Wales over the next few months.

The latest climate statement issued by the Bureau of Meteorology indicates wetter than normal conditions across northern NSW for the December quarter.

However, the manager of the bureau's NSW Climate Service Centre, Perry Wiles, says there is less chance of above average rainfall across the central and far west.

"The odds of above median rainfall are highest in the north of NSW and they basically grade down to about neutral conditions in the south, so not so good in the south where there's still obviously strong drought conditions continuing," he said.

Mr Wiles says the outlook for the state is mixed.

"The only area that's strongly likely to be getting rain is the north, the northern part, north-east of the state where the strongest odds are, so the central and western areas are neutral, so basically there's no strong indicator of drought breaking rain in the next few months," he said.

Overnight storms delivered 33 millimetres of rain at Trangie, 13mm at Forbes and West Wyalong and 10mm at Young.

A total of 8mm was recorded at Bathurst and Coonamble.
