Push for Bunbury to be declared GP special need area

Posted October 14, 2008 15:10:00

Western Australian Health Minister Kim Hames has urged his federal counterpart to declare Bunbury an area of unmet need for general practitioners.

An area of unmet need is made a priority for trained overseas doctors.

Dr Hames met the federal Minister for Health, Nicola Roxon, last week, to discuss the state's doctor shortage and creating broader training programs to get doctors into rural areas.

He says there is a critical shortage of GPs in the south-west.

"I mean it's not defined to Bunbury, it also exists in other states and we have certainly urged the federal Minister to declare it an area of special need," he said.
