FMG considers iron ore road appeal

Posted October 14, 2008 15:16:00

Fortescue Metals Group (FMG) is expected to appeal against a Warden's Court decision to prevent a subsidiary company from building a road through Hancock Prospecting's Roy Hill iron ore project.

FMG Chichester applied for a licence to build the road through Roy Hill because it is the shortest route from Newman to its Christmas Creek and Cloud Break operations.

Warden Graeme Calder found the road would affect Hancocks' operations and reduce the efficiency of the mine.

The Roy Hill Project is 120 kilometres north of Newman.

FMG's executive director, Graeme Rowley, says the company sought the licence to protect access to its Christmas Creek and Cloudbreak mines.

"We're definitely going to appeal the result. It was a complicated process and I think the warden was aware of the complications here, and I think there are grounds for an appeal," he said.
