Kununurra to keep CDEP: Macklin

Posted October 14, 2008 15:50:00

The federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs, Jenny Macklin, says a program which pays Indigenous people to perform unskilled work will be retained in Kununurra, despite community support for withdrawing the scheme.

The Federal Government has released a paper outlining changes to Community Development Employment Projects (CDEP), but the Kimberley's Wunan Foundation wants the program abolished in the small Western Australian town, where there is a huge demand for entry level workers.

The foundation says the program cultivates a culture where welfare is a way of life.

The Government has described Kununurra's economy as "emerging" and says CDEP will be retained but restructured to equip people with the skills needed to enter the work force.
