At least 28 Taliban militants have been killed by a new tribal force and Pakistani troops in the country's Bajaur region.

About 190,000 people have been displaced by the fighting during the last two months.

Pakistani helicopters and jets fired on militant hideouts, killing 16 militants.

Artillery and mortars killed 10 more while another two were killed in fighting with the newly formed Tribal Lashkar.

The group is a local force that last week started fighting against militants hiding in the region.

Tribesmen in the group say Taliban and Al Qaeda militants are undermining their control of the border area.

Pakistan says in the past two months 1,000 militants have been killed in the Bajaur region in some of the heaviest fighting there since 2001.
