Swimming enclosure to go: Council

A Sunshine Coast Regional councillor is expecting a backlash from residents angry about the decision to remove a swimming enclosure from La Balsa Beach at Point Cartwright.

A council committee has voted to support a recommendation from staff that the swimming net at La Balsa Cove be removed.

The net currently provides protection from sharks but it could go as early as next week.

Councillor Paul Tatton says he understands not everyone will be happy with the decision.

"Council has to act in the best interests of the community," Councillor Tatton said.

"Council has to act in regard to their duty of care for the community.

"Currently we have been given legal opinion that with the net in place it is actually more of a risk there than what it is to not have the net in place."
