Fire still a risk for sacred Indigenous site

Posted October 15, 2008 11:29:00

Mopping up continues today after fire threatened a significant Aboriginal cultural site on the New South Wales far south coast.

Mumbulla Mountain, north of Bega, is part of a chain of important Aboriginal cultural sites stretching from the Victorian border to the Shoalhaven.

A lightening strike during a fierce electrical storm earlier this week ignited drought-stricken undergrowth in the Biamanga National Park.

It triggered a joint operation by the Rural Fire Service (RFS) and National Parks and Wildlife Service.

Fire authorities say tinder-dry conditions are heightening the fire risk.

National Parks spokesman Preston Cope says he was worried by the intensity of the blaze.

"Getting up to two metre flame heights in the middle of the night at two o'clock in the morning," he said.

Mumbulla is rich in Koori history that dates back thousands of years.
