Council offers amnesty for illegal building works

There is to be an amnesty for Robinvale residents with illegal building works on their properties.

The Swan Hill Rural City Council says it is aware of some illegal structures that might have been put up because residents were unaware of the building laws due to cultural differences and langauge barriers.

The Council's Geoffrey Gray says written material is being distributed in several languages to explain the rules and the amnesty.

"After the amnesty there will be a compliance audit. Council staff will be going out and actively trying to identify items that might need a planning permit or a building permit or obviously where there is building works that don't comply," he said.

"It's sort of like a carrot and stick approach in some ways but we are trying to get that education component out there first."
