Melbourne's Museum is to get $7 million makeover.

The life and science gallery will be upgraded to include four new exhibitions, which will feature more than 3,000 objects from its collection.

The revamp is due to finish in 2010.

Museum spokeswoman Kate Phillips says it is a significant redevelopment.

"We'll be putting out some of the objects that haven't been seen for a long time or maybe some of them have never been seen, including a lot of rocks and minerals, our fantastic displays of animals from around the world, great displays of fossils, and putting them in the context of the life that they came from," she said.
