Call for more efficient housing: VCOSS

Posted October 15, 2008 13:01:00

The Victorian Council of Social Service says poor urban design and inefficient housing are adding to the cost of living for many Victorians.

The Chief Executive of VCOSS, Cath Smith, says she will meet with the State Government this week to propose more investment in public transport infrastructure and the retro-fitting of homes to increase water and energy efficiency.

Ms Smith says governments need to put more emphasis on sustainable design.

"We're not just talking about affordability of housing, we're talking about affordable living," she said.

"When you think about where a home is located and whether or not it's of an energy-efficient design, that's what really impacts on how much it's going to cost you to live there."
