Five men charged over handbag assaults

Posted October 15, 2008 14:03:00

Police have charged five young men for allegedly assaulting three women while trying to steal their handbags on the New South Wales south coast.

It is alleged the women, all aged in their 70s, were attacked by the group of men at Dapto Railway Station yesterday morning.

One of the women was punched and dragged along the ground when she refused to let go of her bag.

The men were arrested a short time later and are due to appear in Wollongong Local Court today.

One of the men, a 28-year-old, has been also charged with a kidnapping in the Shoalhaven.

Police allege the man was one of three who forced their way into a 64-year-old man's home at Falls Creek on Monday night and demanded money.

Police say the man was taken from his home and was found in East Nowra later that night.
